About Me

For good communications, go to a communications specialist. For great communications, go to a journalist.

A journalist's career is in detecting and excising BS. And if you want great communications, you need a good BS detector, whether it's for website copy, a blog, a deeply researched report or a social media campaign. I believe readers of all stripes are naturally curious, and when they start to ask questions about your content, you need to have answers.

As a provincial and national award-winning journalist, I uplift voices that would otherwise go unheard. I bring readers insight into local unhoused and drug user communities, unveil systems that marginalize, and translate complex concepts and issues into engaging and accessible stories.

Services

Writing & Editing

My strength is in the deep dive — strong research, solid data, and an array of perspectives that can paint a complete picture of any issue. But as a former daily journalist, I also specialize in a quick turnaround, providing all the context necessary for a good understanding while writing in a way that grabs readers' attention and holds it.

Research & Fact Checking

With more than a decade under my belt in journalism, I am more than adept at all types of research and fact-checking, including filing freedom-of-information requests, accessing court documents, interviews with experts and those with lived and living expertise, sifting through data and poring over dozens of papers and chapters of research to ensure no important context is missed.

Media
Training

As a still-practising journalist, I have a strong understanding of the current media landscape. The media of the mid-2020s is not the media of the mid-2010s — or even that of the early 2020s. As layoffs continue apace and outlets have ever-fewer resources, it's  as important as ever to know how to navigate this landscape, and how to be heard by media.

Journalism

I am a practising journalist, writing in The Bind, my own website and newsletter, as well as for publications ranging from Filter Magazine and The Maple to The Tyee and The Globe and Mail. My work has received provincial and national awards, including the Ma Murray, Jack Webster, and the Canadian Community Newspaper Awards. I've written on issues of housing, drug policy, poverty, inequality, education, and municipal politics and more.
